The Innovation & Equitable Development Office (Inno.ED) at the Department of Small & Local Business Development (DSLBD) at times provides the following training curriculum to DC entrepreneurs (timing subject to change, visit DSLBD Eventbrite for the latest offerings):
The Build a Dream workshop is based on open source information, and this workshop series was developed in the District of Columbia by Kate Mereand in 2017. Many co-trainers have supported, adapted, and continue to use elements of this workshop and the open-source business development principles it is based on. Entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship training, is for everyone. All training materials are open source and can adapted by trainers interested in utilizing the materials.
Build a Dream 10-hour Course

Module 1: Lean Canvas
Module 2: Customer Discovery
Module 3: Basic Business Financials
Module 4: Pitching in All Its Forms
Module 5: Participant Pitch Practice
We have trained the Build a Dream curriculum to over 2000 DC residents. It is a high level overview about how to think about entrepreneurship and the basics of developing a business model. It is useful to beginners as well as seasoned entrepreneurs who are seeking to pivot and refresh. It is not a replacement to more in-depth business training, but can help participants see the landscape of what more they want to learn to move forward. This is a facilitated discussion format.
Build a Dream Extended 20-hour Course
1. First five modules of Build a Dream
2. Business Plans vs Pitch Decks
3. Landscape on Access to Capital
4. Marketing & Social Media
6. Give & take, an ecosystem building exercise
DSLBD launched the extended version of Build a Dream at the request of participants to go deeper on some topics. We have draft materials that are serviceable and shareable but not compiled into a book like the 10-hour course.
