(Washington, DC) – On Friday, March 3 at 10:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will launch the neighborhood revitalization program in Eastern Market, designating the area as the newest Main Street in the DC Main Streets program, an initiative that promotes the revitalization of traditional business districts and has generated more than 2,000 jobs in the last two years. The program serves as one component of the Bowser Administration’s overall effort to continue reducing unemployment in the District, which has fallen in all eight wards since Mayor Bowser took office.
DC Main Streets serves as the citywide coordinating program that provides services and funding for the twelve Main Streets programs in Washington, DC. Each DC Main Streets program is organized and led by local volunteers and community development professionals who lead sustainable, community-driven revitalization programs that promote economic development, strengthen their neighborhoods, and improve the quality of life for residents.
DC Main Streets is a nationally recognized program, and three of its programs - Barracks Row, H Street NE, and Shaw – have received the distinguished Great American Main Street Award. Washington, DC is the only city in the country with three Great American Main Street Awards.
